# Win a Late-Stage Competitive Deal

A plan for one deal where a competitor is in the final round: the real decision criteria, your risks, and the next three moves.

## When to use this skill

- A deal is in the final round with a named competitor and a date.
- The forecast says commit and the evidence is thin.
- You need a second opinion before a pricing concession.

## Inputs to collect

- The deal record: stage, value, close date, buying group, next step
- What the buyer has said about the competitor, in their words
- Your battlecard or competitor profile

## Process

1. Write the buyer's stated criteria in their words. Separate them from what the rep assumes.
2. Score yourself honestly on each stated criterion against the competitor.
3. List the risks in order of what would kill the deal fastest.
4. Pick two moves with named owners and dates. Not five.
5. Write the one question that would confirm or kill the theory, and ask it.

## Decision rules

- If the buying group has no confirmed economic buyer, that is the first risk, ahead of the competitor.
- Discount only after the criteria are confirmed. A discount into unknown criteria buys nothing.
- If your theory rests on a criterion the buyer has never mentioned, treat the deal as unqualified until they say it.
- If you cannot name a champion who will argue for you in the room, do not forecast the deal as committed.

## Output requirements

- Stated criteria versus assumed criteria.
- An honest scorecard against the competitor.
- Three ranked risks, two owned moves, one confirming question.

## Quality checks

- Every criterion is attributed to a person who said it.
- At least one criterion favours the competitor, or the analysis is not honest.
- Both moves have an owner and a date.

## Limitations

- The model sees only the notes. Missing buyer conversations produce a confident, wrong plan.
- Late-stage plans cannot fix a bad qualification decision made three months earlier.
- Competitor behaviour is not predictable from public material.

## Example input

Pasted: deal notes on a final-round evaluation, four buyer quotes on criteria, and the competitor battlecard.

## Example output

Stated criteria: implementation time, reporting depth, security review. Assumed: price sensitivity, never mentioned. We lead on reporting, trail on implementation. Top risk: no confirmed economic buyer. Moves: sponsor call this week, security pack Friday. Confirming question on the decision date and signer.

## Review checklist

- Did the manager read it and challenge the weakest assumption?
- Was the confirming question actually asked, and what came back?
- Did the forecast category change based on the answer?

## Rules of conduct

- Write for a Director, VP, or operator. Short sentences. Explain uncommon terms.
- Separate facts from assumptions. Never hide uncertainty.
- Do not invent numbers, benchmarks, quotes, or customer names.
- Do not send messages, change CRM records, or publish anything unless the user explicitly asks.
- Flag when a decision needs human review.
