When the Anthropic Token Commitment Burns, Does the Discount Die on the Next Token, or Do We Get OpenAI Grace?
The Information (via TNW / MacObserver, Sep 28–29 2026): Anthropic ends enterprise discounts the moment contracted tokens are exhausted; OpenAI gives rest-of-month plus about one month to renegotiate; cloud providers often keep the discount on over-commit for the rest of the contract. Map cliff vs grace, overage rate, notice, true-up, and share-of-wallet onto the Order Form before agent burn scales.

The short answer
When our Anthropic token commitment burns mid-term, does the negotiated discount die on the next token, or do we get OpenAI-style grace, and which overage, true-up, notice, and share-of-wallet lines must be on the Order Form before agents scale?
Decision rule
Budget the cliff, not the sticker. Get cliff vs grace in writing. Name the overage rate, notice threshold, true-up window, share-of-wallet %, and who owns post-cliff chargeback before agent burn scales.

Operator action
This week: pull the Anthropic and OpenAI paper. Mark cliff vs grace, overage rate, notice threshold, true-up window, and share-of-wallet %. Do not scale agent burn until those lines are named.

List $/MTok cuts are already on the site. This is a different bill risk: the commitment cliff. When contracted tokens run out mid-term, does the negotiated discount die on the next token, or do you get time to renegotiate?

The Information (Kevin McLaughlin, Mon Sep 28 2026), reported by [TNW](https://thenextweb.com/news/anthropic-openai-enterprise-discounts-tokens-the-information) and [MacObserver](https://www.macobserver.com/news/anthropic-ends-enterprise-discounts-once-token-allotments-run-out/). Anthropic ends enterprise customers' discounts once they use up the tokens covered by their contracts. Buyers must renegotiate or pay standard list rates. Tokens are the units used to bill for text models read and write.
Managers who buy from both vendors put Anthropic's discounts at about 15% off list. TNW has not independently verified that figure. Treat ~15% as reported, not audited.

When the Anthropic Token Commitment Burns, Does the Discount Die on the Next Token, or Do We Get OpenAI Grace?. Diagram showing Evidence, Analysis, Decision, Outcome.OpenAI grace (same reporting). A software licensing adviser told The Information that OpenAI gives customers the rest of the current month plus one more month to agree a new contract. After that, list prices apply.
Cloud keep-discount (same reporting). Jeff Muscarella, chief innovation officer at NPIFinancial, told The Information that Amazon, Microsoft, and Google usually let customers keep their discount on usage above commitment for the rest of the contract. That is a different surprise shape than a hard cliff.
Share of wallet. CodeRabbit CEO Harjot Gill and another manager said both Anthropic and OpenAI have started adding share-of-wallet clauses to discount deals. These require large customers to send most of their AI budget to one platform. Gill said OpenAI is now CodeRabbit's main AI supplier; six months ago it was Anthropic. The company spends tens of millions of dollars a year on AI.
Scale context (per the report, via TNW). More than 100 companies spent over $10M a year with Anthropic in the 12 months to June; more than 1,000 spent over $1M. Named majors include Meta and Cursor. Anthropic's revenue passed OpenAI's for the first time last quarter, per the report. Both vendors also cut list prices recently.

Decision rule for Director+ RevOps / Finance

- Get cliff vs grace in writing. Anthropic-style: discount ends when contracted tokens are exhausted. OpenAI-style: rest of month plus about one month before list. Do not assume cloud keep-discount rules apply to model vendors.
- Name the overage / list snapback rate. Soft-open the exact rate until your AE puts it on paper. The risk is negotiated discount flipping to list overnight when agents burn through the commit.
- Require burn alerts / notice. Put an 80% (or similar) commitment notice and who owns the alert on the paper. Agent loops can exhaust a commit without a human watching the meter.
- True-up / recontract window. Who must sign, how fast, and what rate applies while papers are in flight. OpenAI's reported grace is a template for the question, not a guarantee on your quote.
- Share-of-wallet % and dual-vendor carveouts. If most AI budget must sit on one platform, name the percent and what happens to Claude vs GPT agent paths. Soft-open clause IDs until contracted.
- Chargeback owner for post-cliff spend. Seat or commit looks forecastable. Post-cliff list is a different ledger line. Name the BU owner before you scale agents.
- Do not invent SKU strings. Use vendor and reporting language until contracted SKUs land. Confidence: HIGH on the reported cliff vs grace shape via TNW/MacObserver; MED on ~15% until verified; LOW on any unpublished Order Form SKU.
Quick compare
- Anthropic (reported): discount ends when contracted tokens are exhausted; renegotiate or pay list.
- OpenAI (reported): rest of current month + about one month to renegotiate; then list.
- Cloud (reported): often keep discount on over-commit for the rest of the contract.
- ~15% Anthropic discount: manager-reported; TNW unverified.
- Share of wallet: both vendors adding clauses that push most AI budget to one platform.
- Not this cite: unit $/MTok cuts (see the live token-cut Order Form decoder). This cite is commitment cliff / grace / snapback.

- When the Anthropic commitment burns, does the discount die immediately?
- Per The Information (via TNW/MacObserver), yes for Anthropic enterprise discounts: once contracted tokens are used up, buyers renegotiate or pay list. That is the reported cliff.
- What grace does OpenAI give?
- Reported as the rest of the current month plus about one more month to agree a new contract, then list. Confirm on your quote; do not treat press as the contract.
- How is that different from AWS, Azure, or GCP?
- NPIFinancial told The Information cloud providers usually keep the discount on usage above commitment for the rest of the contract. Model-vendor cliffs are a different bill shape.
- What is a share-of-wallet clause?
- Reported discount language that requires large customers to send most of their AI budget to one platform. Name the percent and dual-vendor carveouts before agents scale across Claude and GPT.
- What Order Form lines should we require?
- Cliff vs grace in writing; overage / list snapback rate; burn notice threshold; true-up / recontract window; share-of-wallet % and carveouts; post-cliff chargeback owner. Soft-open SKUs until the AE writes them.
- Is this the same as the token price cut cite?
- No. Unit $/MTok cuts are a different decoder. This one is commitment exhaustion: discount death vs grace vs unforeseeable list snapback.
