SLING

SLING is a five-move sequencing rule for AI change: Set the foundation, Layer it in, Iterate in parallel, Nudge don't shove, Ground truth every number. OAR tells a team where to aim. SLING tells the team how to get there without a rollback event.

What it is

The teams that did foundation work first accelerate faster than anyone else. It is the unsexy work that no one posts about, and it is the only reason later bets compound.

SLING is also a post-mortem tool. When an initiative failed, one of the five moves was skipped, and it is usually the first or the last.

The five moves

S

Set the foundation

Fix data, definitions, identity, and pipeline hygiene first. Data preparation absorbs most AI project time, and most projects fail on data quality before they fail on the model.

L

Layer it in

Thread AI through the seams of the stack you already own before you rip anything out. Different teams buy different tools for different reasons, and nobody connects them. That seam is the work.

I

Iterate in parallel

Run small Optimize bets and one larger Reinvent bet at the same time. Small wins fund the big bet. The big bet pulls the organization forward before the small wins run out of budget.

N

Nudge, don't shove

Move each production system one step at a time. Contained rollouts contain failures. You want dents, not craters.

G

Ground truth every number

Measure against a pre-AI baseline captured before the switch was flipped. Without it you cannot tell whether AI moved the number, the market moved it, or a rep got lucky.

The SLING sequence

Foundation and ground truth are the anchors. Layer and nudge are the frame. Iterate is the shot. OAR is the target.

The skipped-move post-mortem

Skipped moves are the failure cause. Run this on any initiative that had to be pulled back.

  • SFoundationDid we fix data and definitions before the rollout?
  • LLayerDid we thread through existing systems instead of ripping them out?
  • IIterateDid we run one small bet and one big bet in parallel?
  • NNudgeDid we roll out to one team at a time?
  • GGround truthDid we capture the pre-AI baseline before the switch?

What you get out of it

Run SLING and you get a sequencing discipline that moves the organization through OAR levels without a rollback catastrophe. The org accelerates because the foundation holds. The board believes the result because the baseline exists.

  • Predictable progression from Optimize to Amplify to Reinvent, instead of jumping to Reinvent and crashing.
  • A measurement story with a pre-AI baseline, a post-AI number, and a stated delta.
  • Compounding wins, because each layer rests on the one below it.

The mistakes it prevents

Skipping the foundation
Buying tools without fixing data. You cannot automate a broken process, and skipping this move builds faster broken systems.
Rip and replace
Tearing out working systems for a new agent platform. Most systems can be threaded rather than replaced.
Serial betting only
Running small bets only while a competitor runs a Reinvent bet in parallel. Three Optimize wins do not answer one structural advantage.
The shove
Rolling a large change to a whole team at once. When it breaks, it breaks everywhere.
No baseline
The most common measurement failure. Without the pre-AI number, the post-AI number cannot be claimed.

How it is used here

Use SLING when Optimize is working and Amplify has stalled. Use it again after a failure to name the skipped move. In practice most organizations skip Set the foundation and Ground truth, then cannot tell whether they are winning.

It's like you pull back a slingshot. The teams that have done the hard work foundation building in 2025 are going to accelerate faster than anybody else. But it's the unsexy non-LinkedIn-posting-worthy stuff you have to do to get to that level.

Common questions

What does SLING stand for?
Set the foundation, Layer it in, Iterate in parallel, Nudge don't shove, Ground truth every number. Five sequencing moves for AI change inside a live revenue org.
How does SLING relate to OAR?
OAR names the ambition level: Optimize, Amplify, or Reinvent. SLING is the sequencing discipline that gets a team from one level to the next without breaking production systems.
Which SLING move is skipped most often?
Set the foundation and Ground truth. Teams buy before fixing data, and they flip the switch before capturing the pre-AI baseline, which makes the result unprovable either way.
